Lördagens nyhet att Vita husets webbplats är ombyggd på Drupal var en angenämn överraskning för Drupal gemenskapen. Det är inte den största Drupalwebbplatsen, inte heller den första som USA:s regering har byggt, men det är en bekräftelse på att Drupal är det ledande sociala publiceringssystemet. Drupals projektledare, Dries Buytaert, skriver på sin blogg:
Being one of the world's largest consumers of computer software, the U.S. government is not new to Drupal. Several agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, and the General Service Administration have been using Drupal, for example. Drupal adoption is growing rapidly within the U.S. government. However, Whitehouse.gov switching to Drupal goes above and beyond any other Drupal installation within the U.S. government, and is a fantastic testament for Drupal and Open Source. It will raise awareness about Drupal across the U.S. government, and across all governments world-wide.
Säkerhet skäl att välja Drupal
En representant för Vita huset förklarar via AP att syftet är "to make the White House site more secure". Det är värt att notera att Vita huset lyfter fram säkerhet som ett skäl till att ersätta det tidigare publiceringsverktyget med Drupal.
Drupals höga säkerhet kommer sig av att tusentals programmerare över hela världen samarbetar för att hitta och åtgärda säkerhetsbrister. Det är möjligt tack vare att Drupal har öppen källkod. Detta skiljer Drupal från ett proprietärt CMS, vars källkod bara ses av en handfull utvecklare, och granskas av kanske ännu färre.
Drupal är flexibel
Ett annat skäl för Obama administrationen att välja Drupal var, enligt techpresident.com, att de "wanted to be able to more quickly, easily, and gracefully build out their vision of interactive government". Snabbhet, enkelhet och smidighet, med andra ord flexibilitet, är exakt samma skäl som fick Sony Ericsson att välja bort Polopoly och istället välja Drupal för labs.sonyericsson.com. More than just security, though, the White House saw the opportunity to increase their flexibility. Drupal has a huge library of user-contributed modules that will provide functionality the White House can use to expand its social media capabilities, with everything from super-scalable live chats to multi-lingual support. In many ways, this is the complement to the Government as Platform mantra I've been chanting in Washington. When you build a vibrant, extensible platform, others add value to the foundation you establish; when you join such a platform, you get the benefit of all those features you didn't have to develop yourself.
