First of all we need to talk about how internet started and now I'm not talking about who did what and when. The single one most important reason to what made internet what it is today is something I would like to describe as "Distribution". Today this is something everyone is aware of and if your not on internet you either not big enough or your probably struggling in you business.
However Internet applications were and still are struggling, as a matter of fact Windows Software written in the mid 90's where better user experiences than most of the web applications are today. Or at least the technology made it possible for them to be. We can see very cool features on the web today, but non of them are using standard technics. Or that is not true either, some are but they do not distribute to the whole world because browsers are not up to date. HTML5 & CSS3 (sorry for being so buzzy) does move us further. But since they still don't reach the world we still need to adopt to succeed in going online.
Internet develops and the majority agrees to and no one questions the importance of HTML5, not even Microsoft. As a matter of fact the Microsoft helps the world with HTML5, they participate in making the standard and their next browser (IE9) will be standardized. We have also seen Microsoft being forced to open up the doc format a few years ago, so that documents can be shared and stored for the future.
We also hear a lot of "talk" about HTML5 + CSS3 being the Flash / Silverlight killer. That is actually true in one way because they new standard addresses a lot of problems with the old standards that Flash could solve. Flash has been the "standard" non standardized technic, for video and banners but honestly this is not what flash is about. Flash and Silverlight will still exist on the web, but you will see Flash / Silverlight addressing new areas where HTML5 does not solve the our needs.
What will HTML6 do? Well it will probably solve even more "problems" with the HTML5 spec, that people has had to create non standard solution for to rule the world of internet. This is why Open Source is so important! Using Open Source or to make technics Open Source is the only way to make them last in the long term. To make it simple: Open Technics can be included in the spec and closed technics can't.
